What’s on your playlist?

Today’s post is a complete departure from anything related to writing or editing.
Here’s the deal: I have hated running for most of my [very short] adult life. My shins would burn for days on end after a jog. After finally caving and purchasing a pair of actual running shoes, I have found a sense of enjoyment in the act. I’ve got three 5k races to my name and am participating in two 10k races this month. The first is on April 15, the Vancouver Sun Run. Nearly 50,000 participants registered each year, making it the largest 10k race in Canada and the second-largest in the world.
Needless to say, I need to practice.
When I’m not running with my wife or my friend, I’ll put the iPod on shuffle and find songs that boost my energy. Here are some of my favorite tunes. Don’t judge – remember that I’m looking for energy, and sometimes that can include guilty pleasures. 🙂
Dead Or Alive “You Spin Me Right Round (Like A Record)”
[My all-time favorite 80’s track.]
Janelle Monae “Tightrope (Feat. Big Boi)”
[Hard to not dance to this one.]
Thousand Foot Krutch “E For Extinction”
[Gives me that boost of testosterone.]
Britney Spears “Till The World Ends”
[Nothing like an end-of-days four-on-the-floor romp.]
Anberlin “Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights)”
[Brings along some introspection.]
Nicki Minaj “Super bass”
[My goal is to actually understand the lyrics by the end of the year.]
Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock “It Takes Two To Make A Thing Go Right”
[HIT IT!]
TobyMac “Hey Devil”
[Still culturally relevant after 20+ years of CCM.]
Stevie Nicks “Edge Of Seventeen”
[I imagine that I’m beating the white-winged dove in a race. Sometimes I win.]
Kelly Clarkson “Whyyawannabringmedown”
[My Top 40 sweetheart…such an angry sweetheart!]
Chromeo “Hot Mess”
[Absolutely love these synths.]
Pink “U + Ur Hand”
[Yes, I fully appreciate this girl anthem.]
Trapt “Headstrong”
[Again, a little testosterone boost.]
Madonna “Papa Don’t Preach”
[Good old stick-it-to-the-man ditty.]
Nsync “Pop”
[Back in the day when Top 40 pop was actually fun.]
Robyn “Dancing On My Own”
[Such an underrated talent, yet she keeps dancing – and I keep running.]
What’s on your running playlist?
First off Todd, I LOVE that you included your guilty pleasures in this post! Such courage. Though I’m about to open myself up to ridicule with my running songs.
Without further adieu, here are my favorite running songs:
When Love Takes Over by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland I just discovered this song and it’s a great one to run to!
Gonna Fly Now (theme from Rocky) by Bill Conti I’ve had this on my running playlist for over 3 years and it gets me going EVERY TIME! Corny, hell yes, but it works!
Good Feeling by Flo Rida
Superman Theme by John Williams As someone who grew up on Christopher Reeve Superman, this song is all about nostalgia for me, but it picks me up every time!
Born This Way by Lady Gaga The first (of MANY) of my guilty pleasure running songs.
We Found Love by Rihanna LOVE to run to this song!!!!!
Stronger by Kelly Clarkson This is the most recent addition to my running playlist and I’m loving this one right now!
I have lots more songs on my running playlist, but these are my favorites right now. Enjoy!!!!
Dave, I think we might share a brain. Everyone has their guilty pleasures – only the truly brave will share! A few thoughts: 1) That Rihanna song has a SICK melody and is definitely a great supply of adrenaline. 2) Pretty much the entire Born This Way album is a prime running soundtrack [have you heard “Highway Unicorn”? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q0m-48Sjok&ob=av2e%5D. 3) Anything by Kelly Clarkson is gold in my opinion, I’ve loved her since day one. And 4) both theme songs are GOLDEN pump-me-up tracks. Gotta love songs that make you feel as though you can conquer the world.
Thanks for sharing, Dave – long live the guilty pleasures!
Yes Todd, we do share similar tastes in running music, it makes me laugh. I also have Super Bass and Tightrope on my running playlist too. I have such a weakness for running songs!
The songs I listed above are ones that instantly speed up my pace a full minute if I let them. Thanks for the Highway Unicorn song, that’s got a good beat too. There are a few Lady Gaga songs on my playlist: Poker Face and Just Dance.
For a different take on running songs, I’ve found The Dark Knight soundtrack/score cool to listen to while running.
Some more songs for you:
Remember the Name by Fort Minor I’m putting the chorus to this song on a custom shirt I’m going to make for my marathon next month. “10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, and 50% pain” = 26.2 miles!
Runnin’ Wild by Airbourne Try not running fast to this song, I dare you!
Let’s Get it Started by the Black Eyed Peas Let me state the I really, really, really, REALLY don’t like the Black Eyed Peas, but this song gets me going every time. Biggest guilty pleasure on my list!
Fighter by Christina AguileraAwesome running song! Fast forward to around 2:37 and it builds to the lyric that moves me EVERY TIME “But in the end you’ll see, YOU WON’T STOP ME!”
Ok, I think that about does it for now! See, what did I tell you about my weakness for running songs!
